How laser/IPL works

Laser and IPL relies on the dark pigment, melanin, in the hair shaft to absorb the light from the laser/IPL, which in turn heats the hair follicle by conduction, destroying its capacity to grow another hair. This process known as selective photothermolysis has been used safely and efficiently in medical lasers since the mid 1950’s in such treatments as the removal of pigmented birth marks.

Benefits of laser/IPL hair removal

Light assisted laser hair removal is quicker and much more efficient than more traditional methods of long term hair removal. There are many advantages of this modality such as not having to grow the hair for treatment, being able to treat larger areas of hair growth such as legs, backs and full faces with ease. There is virtually no down time after a session. The treatment has no risk of infection and make up can be applied immediately after treatment. Results are visible with two weeks of the first session.

Electrolysis

At Cristianos we offer both Blend and Thermolysis (short wave diathermy) methods. Electrolysis can be used to treat any hair or skin colour and in cases where light assisted hair removal may be contra-indicated.

Systems We Use

We use a variety of systems, Chromos 694 Ruby Laser, Lightsheer Diode Laser and Energist Ultra Variable Pulsed Light. At Cristianos we very much work as a team including beauty therapist and nurses. All are highly trained and qualified in their own fields and in the safe and effective use of laser/IPL. They are also members of the British Institute and Association BIAE of Electrologists. Our staff share their knowledge for the benefit of each other and their clients. We do not have a high turn-over of staff and most have been with us from the start, making them the most experienced team you will find working in this field.

Health and Safety

The recent events of 2020 surrounding COVID-19 have brought the subject of hygiene to the fore of most people’s minds. Of course for professionals working in the field of laser/IPL treatment we are well versed in hygiene procedures and conduct them as a routine aspect of our work. This isn’t to say we are complacent but you can rest assured written policy and procedures underpin our work.

Gloves, masks and aprons are provided for staff use and hand washing and sanitiser gels are available for both staff and clients.

Health and safety also covers many other areas of our work from preventative maintenance to servicing of equipment, which of course goes on in the background unseen by the client. However we need to make clients aware of the rules concerning the safe use of lasers/IPL equipment and clinicians will advise clients of this when visiting the clinic.

Consultation

Consultations must be conducted prior to considering treatment. This is part of the process of consent to treatment. You must be told the options, their effects, side-effects, benefits, risks and limitations of any treatment before you can give your valid consent to any form of treatment. You must also be given as much time as you need to consider that information, therefore you will never be sold anything or coerced into treatment.

Test patch must also be conducted before any treatment will be performed, this is to ensure, as far as is possible that you will not have an adverse reaction.

What will laser/IPL feel like?

Many people say laser/IPL feels like the flick of an elastic band however the sensation is different for everyone and is dependent on such things as the system used, the colour of your skin, any medications you may be taking. Having a test patch is the only way to gauge the sensation and your individual skin reaction to laser/IPL.

How does laser hair removal work?

Before we can fully understand how laser hair removal works in we need to look at the process of hair growth. On the surface of the skin all hair looks the same but the condition of the hair follicle is vitally important to the success of laser hair removal.

The effects of Ruby Laser light on hair growth was first observed by Professor Marc Clement whilst conducting a scientific experiment. This discovery was followed by substantial theoretical and experimental studies leading to the prediction of laser parameters that should achieve depilation.

Starting with a basic understanding of the laser tissue interaction, computer models were constructed to simulate effects on hair and surrounding skin when illuminated with intense pulse laser light. These models allowed the prediction of the laser parameters necessary to achieve depilation whilst minimising the risk of unwanted side effects. The ultimate goal being a fast and safe procedure, which could be carried out on the vast majority of the population.

On completion of the theoretical study, an ethically approved trial was carried out to determine if the computer prediction matched the clinical reality. Laser depilation is based on the technique know as selective photothermolysis. This is based upon the principle of using laser energy to selectively destroy a target beneath the surface of the skin whilst leaving the surrounding healthy tissue intact. The premise is therefore to irradiate the skin surface with a suitable laser source, which only deposits its energy in the target, the light passing harmlessly through the other tissue components.
