Laser Hair Removal NHS

Many people including some doctors and consultants may be under the impression that funding for laser hair removal NHS falls under the category of cosmetic procedures and is therefore not accessible via the NHS. However under certain circumstances funding is provided via the NHS for the removal of unwanted hair growth for conditions such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and  Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) and Pilonidal Sinus.

Funding for many treatments including hair removal can be made available through the Exceptional Cases Criteria. This is a set of circumstances laid down by each Integrated Care Board or (ICB) which will state what will and will not be funded and under what circumstances. For example; certain medications may not routinely be available on the NHS but can be accessed under the Exceptional Cases Criteria. Individual Funding Request (IFR)

Laser hair removal NHS is available but each case is looked at on its own merits. In order to access funding via this route your GP must approach the (ICB) for and Individual Funding Request (IFR). The GP has to complete a form explaining the circumstances of your case. The hair growth must be as a result of a medical condition for example as above or must be exacerbating a medical condition such as Pilonidal Sinus.

Laser hair removal is safe, but it can occasionally cause side effects, such as pain and discomfort, and red skin that may last for some time.

It may also not be suitable for everyone, including pregnant women and people with certain skin types. There’s no evidence to suggest that laser hair removal causes skin cancer.

It’s important to make sure the person doing your laser hair removal is experienced and suitably qualified. Check they’re on a register to show they meet set standards in training, skill and insurance.
