Thread Veins

At our Clinics in Altrincham Manchester, Bury Lancashire, Leeds, London and Liverpool we specialise in the reduction of thread veins.

Thread veins are a condition where small veins become visible on the skin’s surface. Small red veins or thread veins often appear on the skin due to a number of reasons such as mechanical damage to the skin, over exposure to different weather conditions of the heating and cooling effects of central heating.

The light produced by the VPL targets the blood vessels causing a heating effect, which can be used to treat small red thread vein close to the surface of the skin. VPL treatment of facial thread veins (or telangiectasia) along with veins in other areas of the body where traditional micro-injection sclerotherapy (micro-sclerotherapy) cannot be used is an ideal substitute. VPL can also be used to treat spider veins on the legs which are too small for micro-sclerotherapy.

During VPL treatment of these veins the light is absorbed in the problem blood vessel, the heat produced causes the blood vessel to be destroyed. The blood that was contained within the vessel leaks out of the damaged vessel causing the skin to appear red or bruised. The body’s natural mechanisms then remove this blood. This process normally takes between 7 and 21 days to resolve dependent on the body site. Those on the face resolve much faster than those on the body. The marks known as ‘purpura’ can be covered with make-up.

Another benefit of VPL treatment on the face is that it may have a rejuvenating effect on the skin due to stimulation of collagen and more resistant to further damage.

Important information Thread Veins

We would ask clients to refrain from using Aspirin, Vitamin ‘E’ or topical forms of Vitamin ‘A’ for e.g. Retinova for 3 days prior and 3 days post treatment. The optimal treatment for larger thread veins on the legs is micro-sclerotherapy, VPL is not a substitute for micro-sclerotherapy in the treatment of these larger vessels. It is an alternative to injecting these vessels with a sclerosing solution and is suitable for the treatment of many red skin blemishes on the face and upper body.
