Pilonidal Sinus Hair Removal

Pilonidal sinus hair removal at our specialist Clinics in London, Altrincham Manchester, Liverpool, Bury Lancashire and Leeds have vast experience in treating a Pilonidal Sinus for the removal of hair especially the ingrowing ones which can cause an infection. The sinus is a small, enclosed pit located under the skin. It’s most commonly found in the cleft between the buttocks and is caused by an ingrowing hair that penetrates the skin.

Most people are unaware they have a Pilonidal Sinus until it causes them trouble. Infection is the most likely problem to have occurred if the area becomes uncomfortable and sore

Pilonidal Sinus is a chronic disease of the natal cleft.  Current thinking is that that Pilonidal Sinus is the result of the foreign body response to entrapped hair. The infected hair follicle may rupture into the subcutaneous tissue, forming a Pilonidal abscess.

Many patients develop a Pilonidal sinus or cavity below the skin which connects to the surface with one or more opening tracts. These Pilonidal Sinuses are susceptible to further infection and inflammation which can result in severe pain and debility.

The incidence of the disease is thought to be in the region of 26 in 100,000 population. The disease is twice as frequent in men as in women and occurs most frequently between puberty and the age of 40.

Treatment options for this condition include antibiotics, drainage and surgery. However, patients are at high risk of recurrence and may endure repeated surgical interventions. Many surgeons recommend the removal of the hair in the area as a preventative to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Light assisted hair removal being the ideal option as the risk of infection associated with electrolysis would be high given the difficulties associated with the treatment site.

Causes and risk factors

Men develop them more often than women, especially those men with a large amount of body hair (especially around the buttocks). They’re more common in younger adults, too, as well as those whose jobs require them to sit down for long periods , it is also said that there is also often a family history of the condition.

Quite why it happens isn’t entirely clear. When they occur in the cleft between the buttocks, one popular explanation is that there’s a developmental defect in the direction that the hair grows – that is, the hair grows inwards rather than outwards.

Funding for treatment is available on the NHS; at Cristianos we can provide an assessment of your suitability for hair removal and forward a report to your G.P. free of charge.

FAQs

Long-term recurrence of a Pilonidal Sinus is reduced with laser hair removal, this is because we can treat the ingrowing hair which can cause infections. This will permanently reduce the hair growth in the affected area and greatly diminish the chances of the infection recurring.

We cannot offer Laser Hair Removal when:

• The Sinus is infected.

• You have had a recent surgery for the Sinus.

• The skin is red, inflamed, sensitive and raw.

• You are currently taking antibiotics.

The simple answer is yes, you would have to ask your G.P. or Surgeon to make an application via an Individual Funding Request where a panel will sit and look at your case and assess its merits. We can write a report to send to your G.P. or Surgeon F.O.C.
