PCOS Plight

Just over a year ago my daughter Lucy aged 16 was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome which we did not know much about at the time. This caused some horrible side effects which included the growing of excess body and facial hair.

We were banging our heads against a brick wall trying to get treatment / advice through our GP surgery and we were told that any treatment would have to be self-funded. Lucy was very disappointed at the outcome from the GP. We had waited a considerable length of time for the GP appointment and she had pinned all her hopes on this thinking that it may have been a very more positive experience with a better outcome.

Things came to a head when Lucy who was very withdrawn and down came to me in floods of tears and very distressed saying that she just could not cope with situation any longer. She hated herself for simply looking the way she did. The facial hair was very coarse thick and dark and she had to shave every day and it was only a matter of hours before it started showing through again and it was an ordeal for her to have to get changed for PE due to the chest and back hair.

Lucy was at a crucial time in her life where appearance is of utmost importance not only amongst peers but whilst studying for her GCSE exams she was also arranging interviews at colleges where she would shortly have to go to study for A levels. There were lots of things that were making her self-conscious about her appearance.

I laid in bed thinking and racking my brain as to what we could do to make things bearable for her.

I looked on the internet at companies offering laser hair removal treatment to see if there was any way I could help her. What in the world could I do?

Trawling through all the companies offering the treatment I stumbled across Cristianos and on their website it mentioned that they could help you to write a letter to your GP to apply for additional funding.

I could hardly wait until the following day when I would be able to ring them to find out about this.

When I rang through I spoke to the loveliest lady you could ever imagine by the name of Chris Hart.

She understood our dilemma and exactly where we were coming from.

Chris arranged for us to go for a consultation in Leeds which was the nearest branch to us to find out what sort of treatment Lucy would benefit from the most so that they could assist us writing our letter to GP.

A lovely girl at Leeds called Emma carried out the consultation and asked for a bit of background information and told us that it could be quite a while before we heard anything.

Lucy started monthly treatments in March and is now December attending on a 6 weekly basis. The difference in her appearance is incredible.

Her confidence is rising daily and she is back to the fun loving outgoing girl that she once used to be and the best Christmas present I had was hearing Lucy say ‘Mum I don’t feel depressed any more’
